Hike, bike, even skate it. Alpine Pedal Path along the north shore of beautiful Big Bear Lake offers something for everyone, even those in a wheelchair or pushing a stroller.
That’s because the 3.5 mile (each way) route that begins at Stanfield Cutoff is paved and basically level with only a few gentle ups and downs, an easy trek for anyone who laces up tennis shoes or inline skates. Along the way incredible views of surrounding mountain peaks including Snow Summit across the water are featured, and the lake itself is a constant companion, sometimes just feet from the path. It also winds through mellow meadow and friendly forest, affording a taste of a wide range of mountain environments, and there’s several benches for those who need a quick breather.
As Alpine Pedal Path snakes along the north shore it winds past the Carol Morrison East Boat Launch, the perfect spot to take a pause for the cause at one of the many picnic tables. Stretch out on a stretch of sandy beach to soak up a few rays, watch the boaters play, drop a line or seek some shade under the trees.
Across the highway is the Woodland Interpretive Trail, with free guided maps at the trailhead or just up the road at the Discovery Center, which follow the 1-1/2 mile path as it explores local flora and fauna with numbered markers.
Further down Alpine Pedal Path is the Juniper Point picnic area, another great spot to have lunch, and then Serrano campground with its tents and RVs. The asphalt path eventually ends at the Solar Observatory, the famous facility operated by the New Jersey Institute of Technology as it studies the sun 365 days a year.
In 1998 the path was extended through a pedestrian tunnel under the highway to the Cougar Crest Trail parking lot. From there hikers and bikers can either climb the four-mile (roundtrip) trail to the top of the ridge—strollers and wheelchairs won’t get very far on this one since it’s real mountain hiking—or head east .6 mile to the Discovery Center for water, restrooms and recreation information.
