Simply Voices: (L-R) Beth Gardner, Helen Adams, Kim Boda, Donna McClintock,
“The Barber of Seville” performed a cappella? Queen’s smash hit “Bohemian Rhapsody” done only with vocals?
Sounds improbable to be sure, but both songs and many more will be presented by the newly-formed octet of singers Simply Voices during a hospital fundraiser for two nights at the Performing Arts Center on Friday and Saturday, February 12-13. It’s sure to be a banquet of selections ranging from love songs in honor of Valentine’s Day to a medley of television tunes like the theme songs from Green Acres and The Brady Bunch.
Expect a toe-tapping night of enchantment during two 7:30 p.m. shows as eight talented singers display their vocal abilities. Altos, sopranos, tenors and bass singers are paired up in twos like Noah’s Ark to create the eight-person group, with the only instrumental accompaniment a touch of grand piano provided by Barbara King.
Simply Voices features sopranos Helen Adams and Beth Gardner, altos Kim Boda and Donna McClintock, Ty Warren and Jason Rice singing bass, and tenors Brian Adams and Steve Cassling, all dressed in tuxedos and evening gowns.
When the show opens with “The Barber of Seville,” an all-instrumental overture, Simply Voices does it simply with their voices, all a cappella. The music is as varied as the show is unique. There’s spirituals and the theme from Mission Impossible, Americana tunes like “Shenandoah” to pop tunes from the Beatles.
“Bohemian Rhapsody” should be interesting. Cassling gets to perform the operetta vocals made famous by the late Freddie Mercury, one of rock’s most amazing and powerful singers. “The vocals sing all the instrumental pieces, including the heavy guitar licks,” Cassling said.
The television theme songs medley, a full eight minutes worth, will also take listeners down memory lane as they hear familiar tunes from shows like The Adams Family, Bonanza, Beverly Hillbillies and Happy Days.
Tickets are $20 and proceeds benefit the Hospital Foundation. Simply Voices also opens Discovery Center’s summer “Music in the Mountains” series May 29.
