Huge Purse for May Trout Classic on Big Bear Lake

Huge purse, BBQ mark 26th May Trout Classic

A larger field and expanded purse means lots of money will be on the line during the May Trout Classic’s 26th anniversary event, set for May 17-18.

Anglers will try to reel in their share of the huge $5,925 cash purse plus equipment prizes during the event, with fishing from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, 8-2 on Sunday. The field for the event, which is annually a sellout, has been increased from 400 to 425 so there are more opportunities to get in on the fun...and a shot at the $2,025 prize for the largest trout!

Spring fishing has been terrific thanks to several Fish and Game plants and some real beauties are waiting to be landed. Last year’s winning fish was a six-and-a-half pound beast netted by Tyler Robertson.

Cash prizes are awarded for the nine largest trout. All entrants receive a Jim Hall Memorial May Trout Classic hat and admission into the Saturday barbecue with live entertainment. Barbecue admission is $8 for non-fishermen.

Entry fee is $50 and there will be gear giveaways by drawing during the Sunday awards ceremony at Northwoods Resort. Net proceeds of the nonprofit event, held by the Fishing Association of Big Bear Lake, go toward future trout plants and improving the fishery. Big Bear Marina is the official weigh-in station.
