Witty stories, tall tales, poetry and much more make for two days of western fun when “Wild West Storyfest” debuts over Memorial Day weekend at Big Bear Discovery Center.
Book readings, poetry recitals, Wild West reenactments and writer workshops are on tap from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on May 24-25, with published authors, professional storytellers and stage performers. Cowboys will be branding stories instead of cattle, and there will be plenty of grub plus western and nature fine art show—along with campfire dinner theater!
Headlining is Alan Geoffrion, whose book “Broken Trail” took the 2007 Western Heritage Award for Outstanding Western Novel. The movie version starring Robert Duval captured six Emmy Awards in 2007 as well.
Geoffrion will read passages from the book, which details the journey of two cowboys as they encounter trials, tribulations and triumphs while driving horses across the west.
“(Geoffrion’s) stories are absolutely brilliant and filled with passion,” said Liz Harris of Wild West Storyfest. “He captures the true essence of the cowboy way.”
Other Storyfest performers include Yvonne Hollenbeck and Gary Robertson, both of whom are popular entertainers at Big Bear Cowboy Gathering, slated for September 19-21. Also on the bill are Andy Nelson and Dakota Livesay.
Stage shows include Beth Gardner’s portrayal of one-eye Charlie Parkhurst, the main character in “Riding Freedom,” the festival’s featured children’s book written by Pam Munoz Ryan. Gardner is an actor and director of many Community Arts Theater Society (CATS) shows.
On the second stage are full theatrical productions of Wild West reenactments performed by Pistols and Petticoats, four times each day. Master leather craftsman Carl Kerns is the featured Storyfest demonstration artist.
Vendors will be selling western wear and other items and visitors will enjoy cowboy-style grub from Jasper’s Smokehouse and Steaks. Storyfest admission is $15, 12 and under free.
Campfire Dinner Theater is Saturday, May 24 with evening performances by Hollenbeck, Robertson and Nelson from 5:30-8 p.m. Tickets are $35 and include full course barbecue dinner.
Also check out the three one hour workshops each day for aspiring writers and those who want to learn more about storytelling and poetry. Spend quality time with authors and performers, include special workshops with Geoffrion and Robertson. Cost is $10 per workshop.
