Big Bear Lake is Southern California's largest recreation lake, about seven miles long and about one mile at its widest. Immediately east of the lake is Stanfield Marsh, an ecological preserve that can be enjoyed through a series of walkways. Benches, an infomation kiosk, and plenty of parking make the Preserve one of Big Bear's better free attractions. The lake is a hotbed of activity from April to October, though temperatures are often mild enough to enjoy the water in winter as well. Big Bear Lake is considered one of the Southland's better trout fisheries, and there's also bass and catfish. Beat the heat on hot days aboard waverunners or wakeboards, take a scenic tour aboard a paddlewheeler or pirate ship, or have a picnic at one of several different parks on the water. All vessels on the lake must have a boat permit, obtainable from the Municipal Water District (MWD) (annually $65 registered boats, $25 nonregistered, daily $15 for the first day, $10 subsequent days), but for the money there's two free boat launches on the north shore that make great picnic areas too. |
