Plus the resorts have been making snow when it wasn't falling from the sky so coverage is excellent with full width runs and light fluffy stuff to play on. Our Big Bear Today team will be out Friday, Feb. 17 before the holiday so we'll let you know hwere the powder stashes are after we're done with it. This week's storms mean winter is in full gear at the Big Bear resorts, just a two hour drive from most Southern California cities. Take advantage of the "Leap Year Special" at the Big Bear resorts and and get a lift ticket for just $29 on Feb. 29. Just purchase your ticket at least one day in advance on the resort websites--click below for the link--and ski or ride for basically half price. Don't miss this deal though because it only comes around once every four years. In addition, Big Bear's two inner tubing areas, Big Bear Snow Play and Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain, are also fully open with snow depths already approaching 20-30 feet! All runs are open including traditional downhill sliding plus unique "Snakes" that whip tubers back and forth and even whoop-di-doos. Magic Carpet uphill lifts at Alpine Slide and Big Bear Snow Play ensure guests never have to walk uphill and are even covered for guest comfort.
Official Big Bear Mountain Resorts Website SNOW SUMMIT is reporting 1-3 foot base of packed powder conditions and has all lifts open and running as needed to ensure little to no lift lines, accessing virtually every named run on the mountain save for Last Chance. Which means this is the resort of choice during busy holiday periods like President's Day. Both high-speed quads whisk skiers out of the base area and access an entire mountain of steeps and cruisers, hits and jumps. Head to the east side for Chairs 7 and 10 service some of the Southland's best blue square runs for intermediates, like Sugar Pine, Timber Ridge and Sideshow. Jo's and Tommi's are open as is Pipe Dream. The Wall, Olympic and other bowl runs are open along with Off Chute and Dicky's. On Chair 3 East Why is now open along with Ego Trip and Zzyzx and Chair 9's Family Fun Park is going strong with Cruiser, Sundown, Mainstream and Skyline Creek. There's 32 jibs and 32 snow features to enjoy in the Westridge and Ego Trip parks plus another 25 itty bittie hitties in the Family Fun Park. After your day of play, enjoy a hot toddy in the legendary Bullwheel Bar, with nostalgia-filled walls and sports action and ski videos. BEAR MOUNTAIN also has 1-3 foot base with packed powder and is almost fully open with all lifts available. The all-mountain terrain park is going off with 64 jibs and 66 snow features around the mountain. Highlights include the competition quality Superpipe, along with standard halfpipe right next to it plus the minipipe up on the mountain. The Park has gotten a nice makeover this week with a nice line of down rails on Lower Park Run; one of them is new to the public, first seen at Hot Dawgz and Hand Rails 2011. Powder Bowl has a nice set-up as well with a couple hips, one right side, one left side, and a few jibs. Most of the jumps have seen a nice, new re-shape and the quarter pipes have been getting cut on a regular basis. All four mountain peaks are open including Geronimo, the steepest, longest groomed run in Southern California at 1,100 vertical feet. Silver Mountain is open with Exhibition and Rip Cord plus other favorites like Grizzly, Showtime and Rip's Run are doing business. Really the only named run that's not open is The Wedge (Quicksilver). Bear isn't all about steeps and park though--it also has the largest beginner area in the region, serviced by the Access Express high-speed quad along with Chair 7 and Inspiration for beginners. At the end of the day nothing matches the party atmosphere of the 13,000 sq. ft. deck or check out the newly remodeled Board Room inside. ALPINE SLIDE AT MAGIC MOUNTAIN is open daily from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. with a snowpackthat just gets deeper. The famous twisting, turnng "Snake with high-banked berm turns is open in addition to traditional downhill runs and Kiddie Area. Alpine Slide is open for night tubing sessions on Fridays, Saturdays and holidays from 5-9 p.m. for after dark tubing that's faster and cheaper--just $15 for four hours of play. With a covered Magic Carpet lift guests never have to walk up hill. Also open are the signature Alpine Slide bobsleds, individually controlled so riders go as fast or slow as they want down quarter-mile cement tracks filled with banked turns and long straightaways. Also don't miss Putt `N Around go-karts and 18-hole miniature golf course, weekend outdoor BBQ, and heated lodge with family priced snack bar. BIG BEAR SNOW PLAYwas once a ski area and snow offers the longest tubing runs in Southern California, and is open daily from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. It makes its own snow with Lenko fan guns and depths that are already stretching to 20 feet or more--enough to last through Easter. All runs are open including the famous "whoop-di-doos" that make for a bouncing shot to the bottom, along with a snake of its own. Plus covered inner tubes go faster and keep riders from getting as much snow splashed on them too. Covered Magic Carpet uphill lift eliminates the tiring uphill walk so tubers get all the fast sliding fun they can handle and there's a second Magic Carpet for busy days so you know you'll get in all the snowplay fun you want. Heated base lodge with snack bar, clean restrooms and video games, plus paved parking completes a world class tubing experience.
